'Velvet'

Velvet was without a doubt one of Australia's top bitches in her time. At 15 months of age Velvet was awarded BOB and Opposite Sex Group 4 at the Brisbane Royal (1986). The following year Velvet not only hunted feral pigs and goats in Western Queensland where we were based but came down from the bush and once again went BOB at Brisbane Royal. The same year Velvet went RUBISS Sydney Specialty to her uncle Ch Jomeja Arley (owned by Fred and Lisa Smith, judge Anna Lane Etosha Kennels Victoria), along with being awarded best headed and best gaited bitch.

In 1988 Velvet's daughter 'Taffy' (Ch Jomeja Calico Tafetta - owned/handled Vonnie Abbott) took over from mum and went RUBISS to dad Am Ch Calico Ridge Commander Cody (Imp USA) Sydney Specialty (Barbara Rupert - Oakhurst Kennels USA), and RUBISS Melbourne Specialty followed for Velvet in 1989 (Betty Webster UK). At this specialty Velevet and her kennel mate Jomeja Sheza Sorceress - 'Honor' - had the run off for best gait bitch and 'Honor' handled beautifully by George Kemeney took the award. Velevet's daughter 'Cara' (Ch Jomeja Calico Cara - owned/ handled Di Brennan) was 3rd place to her mum in open bitch.

Velvet was awarded best ridge specialty (Paula Bockman 1989) which made her the first ridgeback to be awarded RUBISS, head, gait and ridge specialty. At this specialty the breed judge was Stig Carlson (Sewden) and Velvet placed 3rd in open bitch (with 9 week old puppies at home). Velvet's daughter 'Cara' was placed second in this class and reserve challenge bitch.
